#39: Competition for Teacher Generated Materials: National Symbols / Grade 2

Curriculum Connection: English Curriculum grade 2. Objectives 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 1.10, 1.11
Class Context and Needs: Elementary classroom, basic level learners
Materials: cards, flashcards, handouts, slide-shows
Activities: warm-up, new vocabulary, matching, writing, reading, painting, comparing, playing a game.
Assessment: Students will match pictures to the new words, paint the cartoon characters according to their descriptions, make presentations describing them.
Overall Objective: Students will be able to learn new vocabulary to describe cartoon characters (as national symbols of American cartoon)
Language Objective: Students will be able to use new vocabulary: cartoon, beak, ears, dress, shoes, hair, tail. They will be able to use “have/has got” while describing the cartoon characters.
Civic Objective: Students will be able to describe American cartoon characters.

Show students Georgian and American flags as one of the symbols of these countries. Then ask students which cartoon characters they know. Draw a mind map on the board.

Activity 1
Show students flashcards. Explain the new vocabulary: cartoon, beak, ears, dress, shoes, hair, tail. Ask students to repeat new words after you.
Play a game: Ask students to shut their eyes (or turn to the wall), take one of the flashcards which are on the board, ask students to open their eyes (or turn to the board) and ask the question “What is missing”?

Explain students the verb “have/has got”

Activity 3

Playing a game: Choose some students and explain the rules of the game. There are pictures of the words they know in the box. Students stand in a circle Each student takes a card out of the box and starts the sentence with “I have got a…” The time is limited. If a student can’t name the picture she/he is out. After the small group finishes modeling the whole class takes part in the game.

Show the students slide-show 1. There are cartoon characters and their description. Explain each slide.

Class Context and Needs: Elementary classroom, basic level learners
Materials: flashcards, handouts
Activities: warm-up, new vocabulary, reading, writing, matching, answering the questions, drawing.
Assessment: Students will do post-reading activities, they will choose correct answers and draw (color) an apple and writing their names in it.

Overall Objective: : Students will be able to learn new vocabulary and do pre-reading, during reading and post-reading activities connected to some occupations.
Language Objective: Students will be able to use new vocabulary: teacher, student, write, read, draw, think, clap. They will be able to read a text and do activities according to the text.
Civic Objective: Students will be able to identify professions.

Elections/Voting
Class Context and Needs: Elementary students, grade III.
Materials:  Ballot Box, Ballots.
Activities:  warm-up reflection, sharing ideas, discussion, writing, presentation.

Overall Objective: Students will develop awareness of voting and conduct a class vote.
Language Objective: Students will learn and use basic vocabulary about sport club voting.

Teacher appoints a ballot counter from each group. They should count ballots and announce the results and write them on the board under each club. Teacher asks students to tell which club is the winner.

Teacher gives a text listening about sport activities to students and hands out cut sentences and asks students to put the sentences into correct order to make a whole text. Students listen a text again and announce which group is the winner.

Overall Objective: Sts. will be able to read the text about Georgian Historic Hero, where we use verbs in Present Simple and they arrange words and verbs to make sentences and teacher gives them new adjectives to describe the hero.
Language Objective: Sts. will read the text and underline the verbs used in Present Simple. They will learn adjectives: brave, tall, strong, powerful, clever, handsome.
Civic Objective: Sts. will get the information about Georgian Historical Hero - Vakhtang Gorgasali.

#35: Competition for Teacher Generated Materials: National Symbols / Grade 2

Overall Objective:  Students will learn vocabulary to describe flags.
Language Objective:  Students will learn and will be able to use new vocabulary. Students will identify statements as True or False.  They will make comparisons between symbols and find similarities and differences between Georgian and American flags.
Civil Education Objective: Students will compare Georgian and American flags.

Teacher (T) hangs a Poster with pictures of Georgian and American flags (Handout A) on the wall and asks Students (Ss) to brainstorm the words for the pictures they see on the flags. T writes the words on the board in English and then calls out Ss to stick the photos of a flag, a star, a cross, stripes and colors (Handout B) next to their words. T practices Students` pronunciation.

Activity 1
T passes out Handout C (“crossword” with pictures of a flag, a star, a cross, stripes and colors) and asks Ss to write the words for the pictures with the help of the words from the board. Teacher monitors, corrects mistakes if they are and asks Ss to sound out the words individually coming closer to them.

Activity 2
T divides Ss into pairs and passes out Handout D, which contains simple sentences describing Georgian and American flags. T asks the pairs to identify and write whether sentences are True or False. Teacher monitors and helps with the sentences. After they finish, the pair having finished first correctly (who is the winner and gets stars), comes up to the front of the class and reads the sentences aloud and tells the correct answers. T writes the correct answers on the board and other Ss check their papers.

Activity 3
T draws a Venn Diagram on the Poster with pictures of Georgian and American flags (Handout A) and explains what it is for. Then T asks Ss say what are differences and similarities between Georgian and American flags. The Ss with the correct answer come up to the Poster and write the words in the correct place. T helps if needed.

Activity 4

T practice Ss spelling and pronunciation of the learnt vocabulary using the Alphabet (Handout E). Each student should have their own alphabets of individual letters on their desks. T says a word and  Ss should  raise  the  first  letter,  then  the second  one  and so  on till the  last letter.  The Ss who show the correct letters come up to the front of the class holding them and stand in a row. They pronounce first their letters individually, then the whole word together. E.g. f  l  a  g, flag.
