#38: Competition for Teacher Generated Materials: Professions / Grade 2

Curriculum Connection: English Curriculum grade 2. Objectives 1.1, 1.5, 1.6, 1.7
Class Context and Needs: Elementary classroom, basic level learners
Materials: flashcards, handouts
Activities: warm-up, new vocabulary, reading, writing, matching, answering the questions, drawing.
Assessment: Students will do post-reading activities, they will choose correct answers and draw (color) an apple and writing their names in it.

Overall Objective: : Students will be able to learn new vocabulary and do pre-reading, during reading and post-reading activities connected to some occupations.
Language Objective: Students will be able to use new vocabulary: teacher, student, write, read, draw, think, clap. They will be able to read a text and do activities according to the text.
Civic Objective: Students will be able to identify professions.
Stage of Lesson
Warm Up
Ask students what professions or hobbies they know. Show them pictures of different professions and they should name as much of them as they can. Students listen to the song about professions.

Activity 1
Introduce new vocabulary: teacher, student, write, read, draw, think, clap. Show them flashcards and let them repeat the words after you. Make some gestures for the new verbs, students should guess the gesture and name the action.

Activity 2
Write new words on the blackboard, stick flashcards on the blackboard. Students should match the flashcards to the words.

Handout 1. Give students handouts. There are pictures of new words and they should label the pictures.

Pre-reading activity: Show students the pictures the text is about. Ask them to name the people and things they see in the pictures. They try to guess what the text is about and what the people in the pictures do.

Handout 2. There are two pictures and some questions connected to the pictures. Students choose the correct answer and circle them.

Handout 3. Give students the text. They read it individually. While reading they underline the new words in the text.

Post reading activity- Ask students some questions about the text. Ask students which words they have underlined.

Handout 4; Students read sentences with multiple choice and circle the correct answer. One or two students read the answers and others check them.

 Students draw (color) the apple and write their names in it.
