Text
Last
Saturday students went on an excursion to the bank of the river. They wanted to
spend a day near the water: swim, play
football and basketball, relax and rest.
There were
lots of people already. They couldn’t find a place near the river. Finally they
found one... but it was full of trash. There were empty bottles, used up tins,
torn paper, plastic bags, broken tree branches, ashes of the fire and others.
What should
they do with the trash they see around? Could they clean the place?
They had to
pick up the trash. Only then they could please themselves and have fun. They spent the whole day there swimming,
playing, eating and enjoying themselves.
At the end of the day,
before going home, students collected all the trash from the field. They put it
into the garbage can on their way home.
Clean up activities.
A hundred
years ago,the words ecology and “pollution of the environment”were not
words that everybody used. They began to be used thirty or forty years ago.
People realized that, by their activities, they were changing nature. They were
changing the delicate balance between all living things.
Now, we have
understood that if we don’t pay attention to ecology and pollution, our earth
wouldn’t be a safe place for our children to live. Pollution does harm to
plants, animals and people.
Why do people throw things away?
If our
shoes are worn out, and they can’t be repaired, we throw them away. If we buy
our yogurt in a plastic tub, when the tub is empty we throw it away. When the
toothpaste in the tube is used up, we throw the tube away. When our clothes are
worn out we throw them away, too. And we might throw away a notebook because it
is full and we can’t use it any more. All these things are rubbish, or garbage or waste or trash. Everything people don’t need any more, they throw away
sometimes in the area near the rivers or in the country.
In the USA
millions of people take part in Earth Day activities every year. The Earth Day is held on April 22 or around it, the weekend
before or after the official day.
On Earth
Day many people joined the clean-up activities. They went to the area and
collect trash, from bottles to pieces of cars. People who do all these clean-up
activities are volunteers.
Volunteers do everything freely, not for money or for fame.
True or false?
1. People don’t pollute the
environment.
2. Polluting of the environment is
making nature dirty.
3. The Earth day is held on the 22nd
of June.
4. People who do cleaning up activities
are volunteers.
5. People understand the danger to the
Earth.
Pollution is harmful for
everybody.
