#16 Fourth Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / Volunteerism / Grade 2

Overall Objective: Students will develop awareness of volunteerism and improve their writing skills.

Language Objective: 1.Students will write phrases/sentences about how they can help other people.
2. In their writing, Ss will use modal verb “can”, known verbs (such as clean, wash, put, water, carry, pick, go, cook.) and known nouns (such as flower, window, box, apple, car, cushion, shopping, food).

Civic Education Objective: Students will develop awareness of volunteerism.

Curriculum Connection: English curriculum Grade 02, Objectives 02.4, 02.5, 02.7, 02.10, 02.13.

Class Context and Needs: Elementary classroom, basic level learners.
There are no children with special needs.

Materials: Laptop, chalk, board and handouts.

Activities: Warming up, Watching a video, Matching exercises, Making up phrases and writing sentences.

Assessment: Students will learn about awareness of volunteerism and write sentences with “I can” construction and some phrases.

Teacher asks students questions like “Do you help other people? How do you help?” Students try to answer and the T writes phrases on the board.

Activity 2

Teacher tells the students that she needs help and gives Handout N1 to 3 volunteers who pass them to the rest of the class.

Activity 3
Teacher asks the students to do matching exercises. When they finish, they check their answers with a partner.

Activity 4
1. Teacher gives volunteers Handout N2 and they pass.
2. T asks Ss match words in phrases. After finishing, they check their answers with a partner. T writes some examples on the board.
5-8 min

Assessment
Teacher tells students to imagine that their parents are going to have a party and asks them to write sentences about what they can do to help them with “I can” construction and the phrases they wrote in the previous activity. When they finish, they read out the sentences and the teacher checks.
