#1 Third Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / National Symbols / Grade 6-7

Overall Objective: Students should be able to gain cultural knowledge of six American and six Georgian national symbols.

Language Objective: Students will practice using ‘agree/disagree phrases. Comprehend brief informational texts.

Civic Education Objective: Students will create a visual brochure containing American and Georgian national symbols.

Grade: 6-7 

Curriculum Connection:

Class Context and Needs: Mixed ability class.  There are no students with special needs.

Materials: Whiteboard, markers, handouts, glue, scissors, coloured paper.

Activities: Warm up, pair work, Speaking, sharing, writing, individual work, creating visual materials.


Assessment: Comprehension questions about the national symbols of the USA and Georgia.

T writes on the board” national symbols” but with jumbled letters and tells the Ss to reorder the letters and guess what is written there. After Ss manage doing it, T introduce them the topic of the lesson.

Activity 1

Ss work in pairs.
T writes on the board the phrases (I think this symbol goes here. We must put it here. Let’s put it here. I think it’s an American/Georgian symbol. No, I don’t think so. I agree. I disagree.) that Ss must use while accomplishing the following task.
T gives each pair 12 pictures of national symbols and they have to group them under two titles: Georgian and American national symbols.( handout 1-pictures)
While Ss are working T divides the board into two halves and titles them.(Georgian National Symbols; American National Symbols)
T monitors the Ss. After pair-work Ss do the same activity on the board. They stick previously printed larger pictures of the national symbols on the suitable place.

Activity 2

T sticks pieces of paper, with the names of each national symbol, on the board. Ss work in pairs again. They have to decide what is the name of each symbol.
After pair-work ,T randomly asks students to fulfill the same activity on the board.
T points to each national symbol and asks Ss to translate the names of the symbols into Georgian.

Activity 3

T gives each pair a handout containing 12 brief informational texts about the National symbols. Each pair must read  and translate  only one text into Georgian for the whole class.( T previously tells each pair which text they are going to read)
(Ss can use dictionaries.
T writes some key words with Georgian translations on the board.)

Activity 4

T tells the Ss that they are going to do a visual leaflet (brochure) of National Symbols of two countries. T gives them all the necessary materials and demonstrates the previously prepared template. Ss individually fulfill this task.( They have to cut, stick and write the names of the National symbols)

Assessment
T gives each student a handout of 12 comprehension questions about the national symbols of the USA and Georgia. They have to do it as homework for the next class.

1.”Freedom” (Tavisupleba) is the national anthem of Georgia. The anthem was adopted in 2004.

2. Coat of arms of Georgia was adopted on 1 October 2004. There is an image of Saint George, riding a horse. There are two lions  holding the shield and at the top you can see the royal crown of Georgia. The motto below the shield reads as: "Strength is in Unity" ( ძალა ერთობაშია).

3. The Flag of Georgia- also known as the Five Cross Flag ( ხუთჯვრიანი დროშა) was adopted in January 2004



4. Kartlis Deda/Kartvlis Deda (  Mother of a Georgian)  is a monument in Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, which has become a symbol of the city.

The statue was built in 1958, the year Tbilisi celebrated its 1500th anniversary. It is a figure of a woman in Georgian national dress. Its height is 22 m. and it is made of aluminum. She symbolizes the Georgian national character: in her left hand she holds a bowl of wine to greet those who come as friends and in her right hand is a sword for those who come as enemies

5. Seal of Tbilisi. The emblem of the City of Tbilisi, was designed in the late 1980s and now is an official seal of the city from June 8, 2005.

6.The Grapevine Cross (ჯვარი ვაზისა,) also known as  Saint Nino's cross, is a major symbol of the Georgian Orthodox Church and dates from the 4th century AD, when Christianity became the official religion in the kingdom of Iberia (Kartli). It is kept at Tbilisi Sioni Cathedral

consists of 13  horizontal stripes  and in a blue rectangle there are 50 small, white, five-pointed stars. The 50 stars on the flag represent the 50 states of the United States of America, and the 13 stripes represent the first states in the Union. Nicknames for the flag include the Stars and Stripes, Old Glory, and the Star-Spangled Banner.

The Liberty Bell is a symbol of American independence.

10. White House
The White House is the official residence and  workplace of the President of the United States, located  in Washington, D.C. It has been the residence of every U.S. president since John Adams in 1800.
The house was designed and built between 1792 and 1800. But the Construction continued and it finished in 1946.

11. Washington Monument
The Washington Monument is an obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, The monument is both the world's

12. The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island in New York City. And is a symbol of freedom, liberty and democracy.  It became the national monument in 1924.
It is a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States to celebrate 100 years of American independence. The statue of liberty is a woman who holds a torch and a tablet on which is written the date 
of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
