# 13 Third Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / National Symbols / Grade 11

Overall Objective: Students will be able to analyze what is a National Symbol, write own sentences  using vocabulary connected with the topic.

Language Objective: Students will match the new words with the sentences,they will describe bald eagle using these words.(bald,feather,quarter,beak,curved,talon…)

Civic Education Objective: Students will learn  about American bald eagle as a symbol.

Curriculum Connection: English curriculum Grade 11.obj XI5,XI7,XI11

Class Context and Needs: 11 Graders,level inermediate

Materials: Sheets of paper,board,chalk,leptop,projector,texts handout1 handout2..
  
Activities: Warm up(slide pictures),reading activities ,2writing activities,making a short story    

Assessment: Write a short story with using new words.(or make sentences with these words)

Teacher shows students slide pictures of an eagle.Then asks them if they know why has she showed them this bird…helps them to guess the topic of the lesson…says to the students that the bald eagle is the national symbol of America…

Activity 1

T-divides st into groups(4-5)students…and gives them a text about American bald Eagle.Asks them to read it in groups.Underline or write every unknown word…helps them to understand these words

Activity 2

T –gives students handout1.Write the correct letters on the lines.asks them to do it in pairs. After checks the answers..

Activity 3

T-gives students handout2.crossword-they have to fill.after shows the answers on the screen.(group work)

Assesment

T-shows the students some new words from the text on the board she takes the text and asks st to describe bald eagle using these words.they have to work in groups, can use handout1 and 2










                               American Bald Eagle


The American Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States since 1782,it has represented the spirit and freedom of the American people.
  Most Bald eagles live in Canada and Alaska.They have white feathers on their heads and brown feathers on their bodies.Their beaks are yellow and curved.They have excellent eyesight.Eagles have yellow feet with sharp,black,curved talons.They use their talons to catch fish.
    The wingspan of the adult female bald eagle is 7feet or 2.1metres.For males it is 6feet and 6 inches or 2 metres.Females weigh about 12.8pounds or 5.8kg and males weigh 9pounds or 4.1kg.
   They live in small groups and they usually keep the same mate for life.Couples often sit together in trees.
  Female bald eagles are 4-5years old when they start laying eggs.They lay 2-3 eggs a year.They keep them in large nests that they build from twigs.They usually build their nests in the top of tall trees.
   They eat fish,small birds,rats and mice.When they see a fish in the water,they dive down and grab it with their sharp claws.
  The American Bald Eagle is on the back of American quarters.On the Great Seal of the United States it’s holding olive branchand arrows.The olive branch represents peace and the arrows represent war.
