#15 Second Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / Heroes / Grade 8

Overall Objective: Students will be able to analyze and describe a hero.

Language Objective: Students will learn new vocabulary and phrases targeted by the lesson and write an essay.

Civic Education Objective: Students will learn a concept about a hero and about Mother Teresa as a good example of a heroine.

Curriculum Connection: Basic Intermediate

Class Context and Needs: Secondary students

Materials: A brief biography of a heroine Mother Teresa, handouts photos, board, papers, markers, mini white  boards, glue , pens, computer.

Activities: warm up, mind map, reading, writing, speaking, shearing.

Assessment: write an assay by using new vocabulary.

Teacher asks students question: who do you think of when you hear the word hero? Students name  some names of heroes.  Then she draws a mind map and asks students  name the qualities that heroes should have. Students write the qualities on the MWB.

Activity 1

Teacher introduces a heroine to the students and shows them pictures about Mother Teresa and her life. Students  must try to guess what  her job was. Students work  in pairs and write their opinion on the MWB.

Activity 2

T gives the students the list of new vocabulary and they practice  pronunciation, then play the game with new words.

Activity 3

Students read individually Mother Teresa’s biography and  they underline the new words. Then they answer the questions about the text.

Children complete using the new vocabulary the crossword and find the missing word.(the missing word is mother Teresa)

Activity 5

T introduces the students the questions that will help them to write a small assay.

Activity 6

T distributes handouts and asks students to write a simple essay individually. She also shows them   criteria for grading essays.

Assessment
T collects the essays and assesses according the criteria made beforehand after the lesson.
