#11 Second Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / Volunteering / Grade 6

Overall Objective: Students will develop awareness of volunteerism. They will use new vocabulary connected with volunteering and propose the solution of problems.

Language Objective: Students will learn new words: garbage, litter, waste, rubbish, clean, pollute.

Civic Education Objective: Students will develop awareness of why it is important to participate in environment cleaning project and show their own way of solving the problem.

Curriculum Connection: They will connect new vocabulary and reading skills of previously learnt materials.

Class Context and Needs: The students are motivated and ready  for improvement.

Materials:  LCD projector, handouts, word-map, pen, pencils and paper.

Activities: Warm Up, Pre-teaching vocabulary, reading, group work.

Assessment: Students will be given oral commentaries.

Group work:  Divide class into 4 groups and give each group task, they should write at least 4-5 sentences about the topic. Children make posters “Make it cleaner” and write their own solution to the problem with drawing (if they want to).

A Big Clean Up

After the storm (Hurricane Catherine) I noticed what a mess was in the school yard   on that day. Then a few friends and my family members decided to organize a huge clean up of the field. There were many tree limbs down and rubbish   around the territory. We worked at moving and collecting   the rubbish to one area so that was a great help for the community.
Besides, we had fun doing it too. The school authorities were very appreciative of our efforts, and so were the citizens. It made the clean up in city easier for everyone!
