#13: Competition for Teacher Generated Materials: Jobs / Grade 1-5



Overall Objective: Students will read about vocations: A cook,
 a teacher, a cosmonaut, an actor and an actress.

Language Objective: Students will revise Present, Past Simple tense and develop their timeline,         scanning skills.

Civic Education Objective: Students will know the concept of job and be able to make connections between jobs and job preferences/duties. 

Curriculum Connection: English Curriculum, G IV, Objectives IV-5; 7.Gr3.7.

Class Context and Needs: Elementary classroom

Materials: flashcards, handouts, board, chalk, balls.

Activities: warm-up, pre-reading, during reading, post reading, a game.  

Assessment: students will use the questions to discuss which job fits their interests.

Teacher shows the students photos and flashcards (handout 1) and asks to tell what do they see in the pictures, students label the things and people they know. Teacher helps the students and explains some new words, e.g. an actor/an actress, a cook, a cosmonaut.

Pre-reading. Teacher gives students the text (handout 2) and asks to read it silently and individually. Next the teacher asks them to underline the verbs in the past simple tense and circle the dates.

During reading. The teacher gives the students time to scan the text and answer the questions (handout 3).

Post reading. Teacher writes the key dates on the board and asks students to make a timeline individually on their worksheets below the text, later students try to retell the text according the timeline.

Teacher shows the students flashcards (handout 1) and asks them name the jobs. Teacher reminds them Present Simple, 3rd person singular and speaks about the vocations, explains them and writes on the board. Then asks questions: “What is he\she? what does he\she do?”

Assessment
Teacher offers them to play and enquire what they want to be. Teacher pins the target conversation (handout 4) to the front of her/his shirt.  They stand in the circle, Teacher throws a ball to a student and asks a question: “What do you want to be? Why?” The student answers and throws the ball to another student with the same question and so on…

Kate’s story
Kate was born on 6th March in 1988.
She started school when she was 6 years old.
When Kate was 9 years old, in 1999, she lived with her parents in Batumi. Her father was an actor and started working in the theatre. Her mother was a cook and cooked delicious food.
One Monday morning she went to school. Her mother put some tasty cakes into her bag to eat during a long break. It was the third lesson. The teacher read a text about the first woman cosmonaut in space, she listened to her very attentively. She liked the story about Valentina Tereshkova and wanted to travel to space.  During a long break she forgot her cakes and began dreaming about space and drew a spacecraft on the wall.
In the evening she read more information about space and wrote a play for the theatre.
In 2001 when she was 11 years old, she went to a drama club, she read the play to the class. They liked the play, clapped her and decided to put it on the stage.
In 2011 Kate became an actress and after three years she played a cosmonaut at the theatre.
