#8 Fourth Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / governmental systems / Grade 7

General objective: Students will be able to learn about governmental systems.

Language objective: Students will learn new vocabulary connected to the governmental systems (branch, legislative, executive, judicial, inauguration, coronation.....) and use it in the different writing tasks.

Civic objective: By the end of lesson, Ss will be able to describe governmental systems and speak about Georgian government using new  vocabulary.

Curriculum Connection:

Class Context and Needs: There are 16 students in the 7th grade. It is a mixed ability class. There are no students with special need.

Materials: white board and markers, handouts, posters, pencils, projector for power point presentation of Governmental systems.

Activities: warm-up, pre-teaching vocabulary,  activity of answer the questions  in pairs by checking students' possessed information of Georgian governmental system, activities of fill in gaps, matching and fill the Venn Diagram with differences and similarities of president and king.

Teacher introduces the topic of lesson, asks students what is the government and what does it mean.  Teacher does brainstorming  and mind mapping to elicit vocabulary for describing government.
 T. teaches new  vocabulary using power point presentation.
The aim of this activity is to warm up the class by introducing the topic and getting them to speak. Besides, this activity develops critical thinking.

T. asks sts if they know what is the government made from and what branches does it have?
After getting the answers T. shows the next slide which presents the branches of government.
This activity helps develop their critical thinking skills and prepares them for the next activity.

T.  gives another question: "what types of governmental systems exist in the world?"Then shows two slides: first slide presents systems of government, second slide gives some information about each system. Sts should read the lines and have a discussion. T. asks sts if they know in which countries are employed democracy and monarchy. Then shows the slides of countries and their leaders.
 The aims of this activity are: to get more information and provide some new information, besides to stimulate sts concentration on the next tasks, get effective discussion class.

Activity 3.

T.  hands out the question slips and asks  sts to speak around the questions. Questions are about Georgian government and its president.
T. checks their answers presenting the slide about Georgian government and  its president.
The aim of this activity is get sts speak in pairs and check sts possessed information.

Activity 4.

T. suggests to play  a quiz game about governmental systems. Sts should read the description of systems and guess what system is it about.
The aim of this activity is check their memory getting active participation class and make the lesson enjoyable.

Activity 5.

T. divides the class into 4  groups and gives them different writing tasks (Fill in gaps, Venn Diagram( find similarities and differences),match the characteristics with president and king.
The aim of this activity is to involve whole class in the learning process  by doing useful writing and thinking tasks.
