#7 Third Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / National Symbols / Grade 8


Overall Objective: Students will learn about several American symbols (landmarks)

Language Objective: Students will practice reading skills and do fun activity to fully comprehend the text.

Civic Education Objective: Students will look into the details of American symbols and gain knowledge of their meaning to American nation.

Curriculum Connection:

Class Context and Needs: There are 12 students. There are two weak students who need help from teacher as well as from classmates.

Materials: pictures, handouts, flip charts, board.

Activities: warm-up, presentation, reading and matching, game Jeopardy, homework.

Assessment: Jeopardy, questions, homework

T shows Ss the flip chart with some randomly written statements and asks them to answer her if these statements ara true or false. She gives Ss mini white boards and markers and they should write “true” or “false” and show her. Then she tells Ss that their topic of the lesson is American symbols.

Activity 1

T sticks three different landmark pictures (statue of liberty, Washington monument and liberty bell) and tells Ss that they represents the symbols of America, they are unique to American people and they have their meaning. She gives them pictures of these symbols and asks them to write the details, they notice, on the sticky papers. And then stick them under the pictures. She asks students to do the activity in pairs.

Activity 2

T tells Ss she is going to give them texts and paper with new words they will meet in the texts and their definitions. She asks Ss while reading the texts circle these words and try to guess their meaning. T gives the texts and papers with new words and their definitions in jumbled order and Ss should match the word with its meaning while reading. They do the task in pairs.
After time’s up T checks the matching with the whole class and makes sure they understand the meaning in Georgian.

Activity 3

T asks Ss to read the texts again and underline the sentences which explain the meaning of the details they’ve noticed in the pictures. T asks them to do the activity in pairs.

Activity 4

After time’s up T reads some details from the flip chart and asks them to read the corresponding sentence from the text explaining the meaning.

T divides class into two groups and represents the game Jeopardy, explains the rules and hosts the game.

Assessment
T gives task for homework. They have to choose a Georgian symbol (landmark), write a small paragraph according to the texts they have read today, so that the text includes the answers for the following questions :
1. Where is it?
2. What’s the name?
3. When was it built?
4. Who designed it and when?
5. What importance does it have to Georgian people?
