#4  Third Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / Professions and Gender stereotypes / Grade 8

General Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify what the word stereotype mean and differentiate the stereotypes from the facts

Lesson Objective: students will be able to match the profession with the gender which is considered to be more suitable for this or that profession and later on realize that the profession does not have any gender

Grade: 8

Civic Education Objective: Students will be able to interpret that anyone despite his or her gender can get the qualification in any profession he or she wants to if only overcomes the stereotypical thinking connected to this topic.

Stage of the lesson
Activity
Time
Activity 1
Brainstorming professions  such as teacher, cleaner etc.,
2-3 m
Activity 2
Teacher asks the students to think of the connection between the words brainstormed and the gender, e.g. cleaner- man or woman and why? Provide an argument why you think so
2-3 m
Activity 3
Teacher distributes the handouts with the list of professions and genders and asks the students to match them according to their opinion individually first then pair share.
When finished students read aloud the matching and explain why they think the certain profession if for men or for women only or could be for both genders. (handout 1)
3-4 m
Activity 4
Teacher puts the chart with the statistics on different professions on the board and asks the students to compare the statistics of peoples’ opinion with their own answers
(most of the students answers and statistics data will match, which is the first step to show that people are tend to think stereotypically)
3 m
Activity 5
Teacher asks the students why people have the fixed opinions on different professions and role of genders occupying them, she asks them if they know how it is called when people have such fixed opinions or generalizations about different people or things
(the answer should be “stereotype” and mostly the students know the answer)
3 m
Activity 6 pre-listening
Teacher puts the definition of the word stereotype on the board, “Stereotype is a fixed ides or image that many people have of a particular type of person or thing which is often not true” , students read the definition and discuss it, teacher emphasizes the last phrase “which is not of ten TRUE”
1 m
Activity 7 pre-listening
Teacher distributes the handouts with the list of stereotypes and facts mixed and asks the students to categorize them into two columns-facts and stereotypes, students work individually and then share with the pair, the volunteers read aloud (handout 2)
2-3 m
Activity 8 while listening
The teacher shows the short video “Like a girl” (you can use a projector)

4-5 m
Activity 9
After listening
After watching a video teacher asks the students to express their thoughts and opinions about the video if they agree or disagree with the content
3 m
Activity 10
production
Teacher asks the students to do the matching exercise once again post watching the video to see if the students have changed their minds and have realized what the stereotypical thinking means (handout 1)
(most of the students should have changed their minds but there will still be some of them (mostly boys J ) who have not, but don’t be disappointed, they will need more time)
3 m
Activity 11
 or homework
On the final stage the teacher asks the students to write a short argumentative paragraph on “Some people think that only men can become the arctic explorers, do you agree or disagree?” provide arguments for your opinion. As on this level students could find it difficult to think of arguments on such a topic especially teacher may put the poster with some arguments which students can use in their writings, e.g. “Only men can leave their homes for a long time, but women cannot, as they have to take care of their kids and do the house work” = this argument is for those who agree with the statement of the writing. “Women are as strong as men and they can bear the difficulties and challenges the same way (or even better)” – for those who disagree.
(If the teacher is out of the lesson time she/he can use this activity for homework.)
Volunteers read aloud, they use the arguments provided by the teacher or their own ones.
10-15 m
