#19 Third Competition for Teacher Generated Materials / Geometrical Symbols / Grade 3


Overall Objective: SWABT draw geometrical symbols: A triangle, a square, a circle, a diamond and use prepositions of place: in, on, at , under.

Language Objective: SWABT identify geometrical symbols: A triangle, a square, a circle, a diamond and use prepositions of place: in, on, at, under  by developing listening skill

Civic Education Objective: Ss will learn and identify geometrical symbols and use prepositions of place: in, on, at, under. SWABT describe the picture.

Curriculum Connection: Language and cultural skills developed during the lesson are outlined in the Georgian English language Curriculum

Class Context and Needs: 3rd graders; Level elementary; 18 students; no disabled ones or ones with special needs.

Materials: Handouts, coloured chalk, speakers, a laptop computer, a projector apparatus, pencils, rubbers, white boards, whiteboard markers.

Activities: Warm-up, activities for  listening and drawing.

Teacher pre-teaches prepositional phrases of place (e.g., in the middle, on the right/left, at the top/bottom, under)
1.by moving around the class. Elicit answers from ss. Where am I? Show me your right/left hand 
2.by drawing dots  on the blackboard  and writing  prepositional phrases of place on the blackboard without prepositions of place. T elicit prepositions of place from ss. Which prepositions of place do you use with  the middle ? the top/bottom? the left/right?/ If Ss don’t know the answer T helps them/
 3. T erases phrases, leaves only dots ,asks ss questions to elicit answers from them: Where is this dot?

Activity 2

Teacher pre-teaches geometrical symbols /a  triangle /a square, a circle, a diamond / by

1.watching and listening to a shape song

2. drawing a  triangle , a square, a circle, a diamond (in the middle, on the right/left, at the top/bottom, under) on the blackboard / writes definitions below them/.T asks questions  and elicits answers from ss: Which shape is in the middle, on the right/left, at the top/bottom, under?

Activity 3

1.Teacher asks ss to draw a  triangle , a square, a circle, a diamond  on their own whiteboard. After drawing one symbol T asks ss to show their drawing in order to check their knowledge then T asks them to erase it to draw another one.
2. T asks  a volunteer to draw a picture on the blackboard according to the teacher’s order. Draw  a  triangle /a square, a circle, a diamond/  in the middle,/ on the right/left, at the top/bottom, under/on blackboard.

T asks Ss to
  1. draw a picture on their own handouts #1 according to the teacher’s order:
    1. Draw a big triangle in the middle of your page.
             2. Draw a circle in the triangle.
             3.  Draw three small circles under the triangle.
             4. Draw a diamond on the left.
             5. Draw a big triangle on the right.
             6. Draw a circle at the top.
             7. Draw a square at the bottom.


  1. check and correct their drawing according to the text given on handout #2
